The subject of the present article is protistology - the science studying unicellular organisms - the development of which in Rus-sia is closely connected with St. Petersburg. More than 30 phyla of Objectives of the subject: 1. Identify the different structures that make up the protists, paying special attention to the exclusive parts of the forms of unicellular eukaryotes. 2. To know, broadly, the diversity of the protists, distinguishing the characteristics that define the different groups. 3. Section Protistology and Aquatic Ecology, Dept Biology, University of Gent, K.L.Ledeganckstraat 35, B-9000 Gent, Belgium E-mail: ilse.hamels@rug.ac.be The section 'Protistology & Aquatic Ecology' has been studying the diversity and ecology of planktonic and benthic communities of unicellular eukaryotes (or protists) in the Schelde estuary. protistology. For this to occur, it is paramount to construct a universal taxonomy for eukaryotes, a common language that will help unify the field and connect the deluge of new molecular-genetic datasets with each other and with the centuries of accumulated morphological, physiologi-cal, life history, and ecological information on these Protistology· 219 microscopy the common nature of the living beings progressively became more obvious on the cellular level. During the third period, biochemical and molecular characteristics of the living creatures were taken as basis for interpretation of evolutionary associations. A guide to current molecular approaches used for studying protist diversity, with a particular focus on amplicon-based high-throughput sequencing (metabarcoding), and identifies some primer combinations with a wide taxonomic coverage and provides detailed information on their properties. Beside publishing original articles the journal offers a forum for announcing scientific meetings. Reviews of recently published books are included as well. The Asian Congress of Protistology (ACOP) is an international conference in Asia for people who are interested in protistology to share results and deepen exchanges with each other. Previous meetings have been held in Jeju, South Korea (2011), Kalyani, India (2014), and Guangzhou, China (2018). one of the best ways of learning new things about protists is one of the oldest ones: sitting in front of the microscope and looking conclusions (1) our understanding of the biology of protists has been determined to a very large degree by the technologies that have been available to study them molecular methods have proved to be very powerful … View PDF; Download Full Issue; View Open Manuscript; Other access options.
