Megalictis reached the size of a modern jaguar and was the largest terrestrial mustelid ever recorded. The skull of Megalictis ferox was as long as of jaguar but wider, almost as of the black bear.It had a powerful bite force, allowing it to crush bones of the large prey, as modern hyenas and jaguars can. Megalictis surpassed in size other mustelids like Ekorus, Eomellivora, and Plesiogulo. 3.> Nape and Skull bite killing techniques instantly kill or paralyze the animals and Jaguar is among the top carnivores whom regularly use these techniques to kill most dangerous pry items. and to employ an unusual killing method: it bites directly through the skull of mammalian prey between the ears to deliver a fatal blow to the brain. We describe cranial and mandibular remains of three undescribed individuals of the giant mustelid Megalictis ferox Matthew, 1907 from the latest Arikareean (Ar4), Early Miocene mammal fauna of Nebraska, and Wyoming (USA) housed at the American Museum of Natural History (New York, USA). Our phylogenetic hypothesis indicates that Ar4 specimens assigned to M. ferox constitute a monophyletic group Megalictis (nimen merkitys: "jättiläisnäätä") on sukupuuttoon kuollut näätäeläinsuku, joka eli Yhdysvaltojen länsiosissa myöhäiseltä oligoseenilta varhaiselle mioseenille. Matthew in 1907, and assigned to the family Mustelidae. Two similar genera discovered at the same time, Aelurocyon (Peterson, 1907) and Paroligobunis (Peterson, 1910) were identified as synonymous with Megalictis in 1996. P. R. Megalictis ferox . Description: Megalictis is an extinct genus of large predatory mustelids, which existed in North America during the "cat gap" in the Miocene epoch. It is thought to have resembled a large wolverine, with a body mass of up to 60 kilograms (130 lb). Some writers suggest M. ferox could grow to the size of a black bear, whilst others suggest a less exceptional mass of 20-60 kilograms (44-132 lb), compared to the wolverine of 10-20 kilograms (22-44 lb). Ekorus ekakeran, a comparable mustelid of the same period found in Africa, is estimated to have been around 40 kilograms (88 lb).Matthew described it as having short stout legs, with Megalictis is an extinct genus of large predatory mustelids, which existed in North America during the "cat gap" in the Miocene epoch. It is thought to have resembled a huge ferret , with a body mass of up to 60 kilograms (130 lb).
