Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 and SB 200 Amp Hello, I am considering the purchase of the KAT500 Tuner. I am driving a restored Heathkit SB 200 with my K3. Currently have a manual tuner.? ?Are there any concerns or comments with replacing the manual tuner with the KAT500? Thanks. I would be grateful for any feedback 73, Ron, K5HM k5hm.ron at Changed the order of power off for K3, KPA500 and KAT500 to reflect that some users power the KAT500 off the K3. Fixed a bug in WinKey for version 10 keyers. Installation and Release Notes: Version 1.864 Pressing the TUN button when the KAT500 was in manual mode did not work on the KX3 and KX2. John, I believe the tuner does what you want; it just doesn't change any front panel indicator. Below is an excerpt from the KAT500 manual: If the SWR is below 1.2 when a tune operation begins, the KAT500 bypasses the matching network. The KAT500 remains in either AUTO or MAN mode but the matching network is switched out of the RF path. This all works fine with the LDG. I am thinking about replacing the LDG with a KAT500 - will this same arrangement work with it? I use a remote antenna switch so I will not be using the antenna switching capability of the KAT500. The KAT500 manual shows using two cables - one from the rig to the tuner and one from the tuner to the amp. This all works fine with the LDG. The KAT500 manual shows using two cables - one from the rig to the tuner and one from the tuner to the amp. The IC-7610 doesn't "control" the KAT500 per se. Changing bands/frequencies on the IC-7610 doesn't cause any response from the KAT500. Only when the IC-7610 transmits does the tuner detect (sense) the RF and then adjust the capacitors and inductors to match to the current antenna. An Elecraft transceiver, OTOH, does communicate with the KAT500 We now have a senior project engineer assigned to overall K3/KPA500/KAT500 operational issues. Improvements to firmware and documentation will result, including a new manual specifically covering setup of the full K-Line. Those of you who have reported problems will be contacted to make sure we have all of the details. February 2017 edited June 2020. Use the USB/Serial cables supplied by Elecraft for each unit. Use RCA phono cable from the Flex TX1, TX2, or TX3 to the PTT Relay In on the KAT500. Another RCA cable from the KAT500 PTT Relay out to the PA Key on the KPA500. As mentioned above, I do not recommend doing this. As a long time user of the K3/KPA500/KAT500 combination I am struggling to get the newly acquired TS-890 to 'talk' to the amp/tuner set-up. I have made up a cable (hopefully emulating the KENSER500) as per instructions on page 16 of the latest KAT500 owner's manual. TS890 KPA500 KAT500 2 ----- 2 ----- Tip There is a warning in bold letters in the KAT500 manual that says "IF YOUR TRANSCEIVER OR AMPLIFIER HAS A BUILT IN ATU, be sure it is in bypass before attempting to use the KAT500. Having said that, if I am running the 6600M barefoot (i.e. with the KPA500 off), I sometimes put the KAT500 in Bypass mode, and use the internal 6600M tuner. 73, Al Once the KAT500's memories are set up, the Manual setting does everything I need. First, with the KPA500 in Standby (or turned off), for every band/antenna combination I use, I trained the KAT500 across the band. I did this by tuning to a fr
