Tips for laser engraving pictures

I'm trying to laser engrave pictures on some urn boxes. My students and I have laser engraved some pictures before, but the quality really isn't that good. If I were to laser engrave on wood I would use Maple. Do you have any pointers that can help me out? What other materials have you found to be great for picture quality?
