Abstract. This manual is the reference text used for the FHWA NHI courses No. 132042 and 132043 on Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls and Reinforced Soil Slopes and reflects current practice for the design, construction and monitoring of these structures. This manual was prepared to enable the engineer to identify and evaluate potential The seismic design method described briefly in this TEK, and in detail in the NCMA Design Manual for Segmental Retaining Walls and SRWallv4 design software (refs. 1, 2), adopts a pseudo-static approach and uses the Mononobe-Okabe (M-O) method to calculate dynamic earth forces. The methodology adopts many of the recommendations contained in Geotextile, a fabric made of polymer material, was introduced as a soil reinforcing agent in the late 1950s. Since the early 1970s, it has been utilized in the construction of retained soil walls. In these walls, the geotextile sheets are used to wrap compacted soil in layers producing a stable composite structure. Page Count: 390: Abstract: This manual is the reference text used for the FHWA Demonstration Project NO. 82 on Mechanically Stabilized Earth Walls and Reinforced Soil Slopes and reflects current practice for the design, construction and monitoring of these structures. Standards Australia has published AS 4678(Ref 1)for the design and construction of earth retaining structures, including segmental concrete reinforced soil retaining walls. This standard encompasses the following features: Limit state design that enable separate consideration of stability, strength of components and serviceability (LRFD) procedures. This manual is a revision (to LRFD) and an update to the FHWA NHI-00-043 manual (which was based upon allowable stress design (ASD) procedures). 17. KEY WORDS Design, Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD), analysis, performance criteria, Mechanically Stabilized Earth (MSE) Walls, Reinforced Soil Slopes (RSS), soil This manual presents the techniques used by Allan Block in our engineering practice to design retaining walls. It is not inten ded as a textbook of soil mechanics or geotechnical engineering. The methods we use are based on time tested soil mechanics and the principles of dry stacked block which have existed for thousands of years. MECHANICALLY STABILIZED EARTH (MSE) WALLS INTRODUCTION This manual is designed for the inspector of mechanically stabilized earth walls. It will provide general guidelines for the inspector; however, the plans, specifications and special provisions govern and must be read and followed. TERMS Check to make sure that all required manuals and directives for the construction of the wall(s) have been supplied. This includes: Standard Specification, Section 554, Mechanically Stabilized Earth System, MSES Construction Manual, supplied by
