A note about Rhino Layer Colors: (layer numbers are incorrect in the video)

Layer 01 in Rhino is NOT Red (it is more like a burgundy)

Items 1 and 2:

Install Polyhedron plug in for Rhino V6 or V5 (Note there is a Mac version to download also)

View Brian James' video showing the Dodecahedron model, how to 'unroll' it, and then a demonstration of Brian folding the paper cutout model, with tabs, into a 3d model.

cmd: Polyhedron. Step by step creation of an Augmented Triangular Prism.

cmd: UnrollSrf. Unroll the developable surface to create a flat pattern. (Explode=No, Label=Yes)

cmd: Rectangle. Create a 11 x 8.5 rectangle near the 'flat pattern' just created above.

cmd: Move. Move the 'flat pattern' into the rectangle.

cmd: Scale2d Scale the pattern to fill the rectangle.

Add tabs on one of each pair of outside edges. Use the Labels to identify the locations for each tab.

Refer to the video above for tab creation process.

cmd: Print Print the pattern.

Finalize: Fold up the pattern and glue the tabs to create the 3d paper model of the Augmented Triangular Prism.

Extension activity: Students choose a polyhedron model to create following the steps above for their chosen polyhedron. Visualize your classroom ceiling with colorful 3d paper polyhedra hanging from the ceiling. A laser or large format printer is a bonus for this part of the model.

Variations:

UnrollSrf command. Explode-Yes, Label=Yes will allow the modeler to print various parts of the model on separate pieces of paper. Make sure the modeler uses the same scale factor if separating the pieces for printing.

Goodall Layout is among the few brand names that maintain all their design work in-house. Until now, this has actually shown effective for the business, whose watercrafts have actually won major champions on practically every continent. This group of designers (and avid sailors) are continuously seeking renovations.

" Every time we go out cruising as well as we see something that could be improved, we instantly check out repairs and also see if they make the watercraft better," clarifies Laurent Verbeeck, CEO at Goodall Layout, "It's one point for the boat to go fast in a straight line, it's rather one more if a watercraft permits simple handling to give you that edge on the race track."

3D printing and CNC for watercraft building

3D printing has sped up the testing as well as finding out process for Goodall Style. "For developing watercrafts, I do not believe the materials like carbon or epoxy are particularly brand-new," shares Laurent, "for us, the advancement that has actually substantially assisted is 3D printing."

The sailboat firm has actually been leveraging 3D printing for around 3 years currently to examine out tiny parts. Their in-house FDM 3D printer generates small parts fast - not specifically high in toughness, yet excellent for screening. "Once we see that it works, we normally make a mold out of it," Laurent includes. For majorities, they typically purchase one or two CNC machined parts to experiment with.

Constant style models

In particular, Goodall Design has actually been trying out their latest boat, the foiling VIPER convertible. With every brand-new layout as well as product model, there are 4 primary factors that enter into play: longevity, weight, look as well as price.

" Appearance is a big reason for us," mentions Laurent, "if a person is getting a new boat, they additionally desire a nice-looking boat. For example, a part that's welded doesn't compare to a light weight aluminum CNC anodized component. And also, if a component is smoother and extra precise, it can likewise help make the boat much faster."

The tail gudgeons (the part that attaches the tail to the hull) are made from anodized light weight aluminum. "The toughest material to go for would have been stainless steel," describes Laurent, "however for bigger components, that can make the entire watercraft heavier.

Tail gudgeon CAD data published to Hubs system with DfM device (go here to see it at work).

Rudder gudgeon made from CNC machined aluminum 6061-T6, smoothed and also anodized kind II.
In the past, Goodall Layout made use of to weld the tail gudgeons, yet switched to CNC machining to minimize the weight as well as enhance the appearance. "What we located superb regarding CNC is the details you can additionally include to the part," says Laurent, "like small markings that make it quicker as well as easier for the seafarer to change the tail to the best place.

" The parts show up totally completed with the markings," states Laurent, "it's very simple to tailor as well as add a style and also engravings to the parts - and we know that every component will certainly have the very same markings.".

For the pin, and also for other moveable parts that have normal contact with the water, Goodall Design went with Delrin because of its resistance to rust as well as water absorption.

Pin made from CNC machined Delrin.

Delrin is likewise economical as well as hard to maker. "We commonly have a mix of stainless steel, for points like screws and the riggers, as well as we use light weight aluminum for the beam of lights," shares Laurent, "however, for all the moveable parts, we favor Delrin to see to it there's no rust. Likewise, we can't make use of products that would certainly soak up water as it would certainly make the boat larger.".

A plug made use of to secure the hindering situation when not cruising with the foils, made from CNC machined Delrin.

Goodall Layout's Foiling VIPER completely assembled.

Inspired to develop extra.

Laurent keeps in mind the group's boosted freedom to experiment in general, by utilizing Hubs' instant pricing quote device: "In the past, we needed to email a company and also ask to obtain quotes for various design and product variations. We simply insert 20 different data and play around to see what's possible and also for what cost.".

This power to experiment a lot more also stems from the shortened time between getting a repair and also screening it out. "If we try coming close to a CNC firm ourselves, we are simply totally at the bottom of their top priority listing as well as it simply takes a long time. Yet with Centers, it's really simple. You just order, even if it's simply one component, and manage everything in the exact same place. It makes the entire sourcing process extremely effective," sums up Laurent.

The Goodall Layout team is also no longer kept back by the high quality of parts they receive. "What we really like at Hubs is the inner quality assurance. If we are working with all different suppliers, there are components that start falling short and also you wonder if it's because the design was bad or did they just really did not pay enough focus to the component when they were making it," Laurent defines, "with Centers, we can simply concentrate on the layout of part itself, as well as not fret about the quality of the component.".

For larger components, they usually purchase one or 2 CNC machined components to experiment with.

A component that's welded does not contrast to an aluminum CNC plated part. "The strongest product to go for would have been stainless steel," discusses Laurent, "yet for bigger parts, that can make the entire watercraft larger. The Goodall Layout team is additionally no much longer held back by the quality of parts they get. If we are working with all various makers, there are components that start falling short and also you wonder if it's due to the fact that the layout was poor or did they simply didn't pay adequate interest to the part when they were making it," Laurent explains, "with Centers, we can just concentrate on the layout of part itself, and also not fret concerning the top quality of the component.".
SLM 3D Printingtag:rhino3du.ning.com,2022-10-11:6307585:BlogPost:1692492022-10-11T07:16:23.000Zcarlhttps://rhino3du.ning.com/profile/carl

With the growth of 3D Printing technologies and the extensive variety of 3D Printing materials, we have seen lots of different 3D Printing solutions such as SLA, SLS, as well as MJF. However all these technologies pointed out above are not planned to develop metal parts. Just how 3D Printing produce steel components, as well as what are the attributes of those metal components? In this article, we will certainly take a look at one of the steel 3D Printing innovations - SLM.

Part1. 3D printing and also SLM 3D Printing

3D Printing is an additive manufacturing procedure that produce a 3D item by adding products layer by layer, which was taken into consideration appropriate for production and also quick prototyping in the 1980s. After more than 30 years growth of 3D Printing, there are lots of 3D Printing technologies arised. More and also more 3D Printing products have been used. There is no question that metal 3D Printing plays a vital role nowadays in making industries, as an example, SLM 3D Printing. Comparable to some metal 3D Printing, SLM printing is the technology that heats up as well as thaws a bed of steel powder layer by layer to produce metal parts eventually. Mentioning the history of SLM, it was developed from SLS 3D Printing technology in the 1990s due to the popularization of high-power laser. As well as currently SLM has been used in numerous sectors, including aerospace, automobile, and clinical sector.

Part 2. Careful Laser Melting

SLM, additionally referred to as careful laser melting, is one of additive production innovations that make use of metal powder for quick prototyping. The SLM printed parts include a lot of benefits: about perfect density, smooth surface finish, high precision, and great mechanical homes, that make the parts can be made use of directly with much less post-processing. So, what are the advantages of SLM options 3D Printing so that it can make such excellent steel parts?

1. The light beam top quality of laser melting 3D Printing is excellent. The products can aboard ideal energy from the focused laser light. The functional components can have greater dimensional accuracy and much better surface area roughness.

2. The process of SLM is to thaw metal powder entirely. The straight manufactured metal parts can have a metallurgical bonding structure with high thickness and also great mechanical residential or commercial properties.

4. The printing material is flexible. The metal powder can be one solitary type or a mix one, while there is no required to particularly develop the raw materials.

There are negative aspects for SLM.

1. SLM printer are rather pricey. Not everybody can manage one SLM printer since the cost is from thousand to million dollars.

2. It is just appropriate for small get rid of complicated structures. As CNC Machining and also Sheet Steel Construction can be alternatives of creating steel get rid of budget friendly cost, if the part is big with straightforward structure, SLM is not the very best alternative.

3. Restricted material. Not a lot of products can be requested SLM. Besides, the printing environment is rigorous for SLM Printing process.

Part 3. SLM 3D Printing Process

The like various other 3D Printing modern technologies, it is needed to prepare the STL declare your 3D layouts prior to SLM Printing. And also next we will discuss SLM 3D Printing process step by step.

Step 1. STL documents are all set and information are checked very carefully to ensure the data are suitable for printing.

Action 2. SLM printer prepares, and the powder roller is rolling down the first layer of metal powder. As well as the laser light will certainly select a zone and also thaw the powder with each other based upon the 3D layout surface area from STL data. The initial layer is shaped.

Step 3. The print bed decreases, and also the powder roller rolls down a new layer of steel powder, and laser light maintain working on the discerning zone. And keep the process going till the parts are done.

Step 4. Waiting to cool and then eliminate the powder on the published component.

Step 5. Finally, take the SLM printed dismantle of package.

Action 6. The parts will certainly send to post-processing if needed.

Part 4. Application of SLM
As one of the most exciting 3D Printing modern technologies, SLM 3D Printing draws attentions from numerous industries. Allow's see a few examples of SLM applications.

1. Car. SLM printed components can be utilized as vehicle components, it is an excellent option for quick prototyping, custom-made components or tiny batch production for high worth items.

2. Medical market. Medical devices or element can be generated by SLM steel printing, such as stents as well as prothesis.

3. Aerospace. As SLM 3D Printing creates light-weight parts, it is not stun that aerospace uses SLM printed components, like air ducts and also Ti64 parts.

Part 5.
